ironically
fresh water, which limits it to 1000' ft. the other option salt is for very deep water (up to w 10000' ft. ). shallow water would be in fresh water conditions 80' ft or under. somebody else chime in, if I got the numbers wrong? the main objective is to cap the unit from trying to look beyond what is necessary.

I use general fishing mode on my Elite 7TI. Only use freshwater setting at lakes. This is a picture at Lake Havasu. Still looking for a good pict of La Jolla screen shots

found it on web
google fishing modes lowrance. information straight from manual came up. fresh water mode ls for 400 ft and under. general mode is 1000 ft and under. yes general will work and is probably the default setting. but, you want to prevent the unit from trying to look farther than is necessary. obviously most inshore fishing is around 120' up to maybe 250'.

I have been experimenting
with this palette also after having watched a video on you tube from a lowrance pro staff member. this selection marks the hard bottom with a dark brown color and makes returns stand out more.
