Newport outside harbor
I was looking to see how they all did. There was a group of 6 or 8 about a half mile past the bell buoy. There was a few off the end of the north jetty and a few in the kelp south at Crystal Cove. Wasn't much going on where I was but I did see two whales swim by between the jetty and the bell buoy. I also wanted to give the guys credit for going out in less than favorable conditions. Cheers! |

Thanks for the update. If it's like that tomorrow I'll probably just stick inside the harbor.

Yeah the swells and chop were a little gnarly with the wind. I was bobbing around for a good while. Interestingly, after 9 the winds died down and disappeared completely after 12 and not howling at 17mph according to MSW.

Same deal at Dana Point today. Windy off and on, choppy, slow fishing. Better than working though, probably gonna hit it again tomorrow

What was everyone fishing for? After hooking a 19 inch halibut while rockfishing in Newport last week, I figure I'll just focus on them tomorrow with some live bait and maybe throw around the big hammer

Saw this post late but the rock fishing has been very productive out of Newport. If you can brave the wind which has been about 10-12mph lately its actually been pretty solid for the reds, a couple sand bass and a sculpin here and there.

We've been mostly going for calicos near Crystal Cove. Where are you finding your reds? Might switch over to that.
