Solana Supermoon For Super Tide, New Species (ID Please) And Some Eats

This is a (late) fishing report from Solana Beach with events having occurred last weekend. Overall, it's a good thing to have so much work as not to be able to post any sooner so I will not complain about the delay.

My freezer was finally low on meat so I was out for any table-fare worthy catches. As luck would have it, I was able to stock-up yet again! Of more interest though was the unusual but pretty fish(s) I caught on my sabiki while targeting GBMs for bait.

This 22-lb and 39-inch (to fork) YT hit a GBM and came home with me to feed the family. It was definitely the long and skinny type. That big tail sure helped it to put up an epic battle!



So...is there (such a thing as) juvenile rainbow-striped-bass among us? Any species ID would be appreciated here. These unusual fish were schooled together in one area and hit the sabiki. Most GBMs I landed using the 1/4-oz blue and chrome kastmaster.

Pedaling into the Del Mar Rivermouth was impossible against the high tidal coefficient created by the supermoon. It was like going through white water rapids but facing upstream. Fortunately it was pretty shallow where I gave-up so I just jumped off and walked over to the shore.

That striped fish is a salema. They're in the grunt family like sargo. Salema are one of those fish that you see plenty of diving but don't catch often. I've had a couple guys tell me they are good bait for big calico bass. I've tried em a couple times with no success tho. Its always interesting to see some thing new in the local waters. Mike

Wait until you get OLD. BTW Baja time for YOU is almost here. Remember your fly rod and the SMALL metal lures with wire. SIERRA TIME. Remind Buddha for recipes for sierra. From the yak if you did not get cut off it should have been 10 for 10. It was 4 for 8 from the beach without wire.

Yes this fish definitely has to be from the grunt family it made the grunt noise like the French Grunts I catch when I am in Florida.

Salema. Used to catch those off OB pier back in the day. Congrats on that Solana slug.

Nice haul. We have caught those Salema on the sabiki near the kelp off of La Jolla, usually just before sunrise. Guess those big eyes help it see in the dark well.

Hey what do I know? For some reason I thought of a pilchard so I googled images of them and some of them look similar to the one that was caught lol

Just out of curiosity ... what was your depth? My buddies and I hopped on the NSF today and they headed up in front of dog beach. Found a few schools on the bottom and got them to bite the yoyo. Not to deep either, I think like 120-160.
