Try Sport Chalet. A buddy of mine rents a Prowler 13 from a Sport Chalet and the way it works is you pick up the afternoon before the rental date and return the morning after.

If you are or know someone in the military. Most bases rent them. Miramar has tarpon 120's, MCRD has old ocean kayaks. Not sure what Pendleton has. The prices are way lower than out in town.
