Thresher shark - Dana point

Went out of Dana Point harbor for afternoon session on Monday. Launched around 3. Paddled to the point. About 1 1/2 miles out, I hooked into this guy at 5:45 and got to the kayak about 7:15. Ended up about 2 1/2 miles out. Another 30 min of wrestling and finally got him on board.

45 min to paddle back in. It was squirting blood on me the entire way from slitting the gills. Definitely felt small and vulnerable out there by myself with blood absolutely everywhere. Paddled hard to get back.

My friend was with me but had headed in just before I hooked into this. Coolest experience so far in my 14 months of kayak fishing. Such an exciting day. Second Thresher of the season so I'm done keepin em this year. No scale but it was well over 100. Me and my buddy guessed about 120 lbs. After picking up a few things of similar weight etc I'd say it's a close guess. A helluva lotta meat. The filets in pic aren't even half of it.

If I ever catch a big threshers, I am pretty sure I would have to paddle of to baby beach to freak everybody out. I'd tell em I caught it in the harbor too. lol

You win the Manly Man award... at least until we get out to Tuna land and someone hauls in a 100 lb tuna.

Nice Job Joe! Wish I was with you that day! Can't wait to see what epic recipes you make with that meat! And what home brews you make to go with it! Cheers

Props for doing that solo. A lot of fish in that haul.

Good eats to you.

Sensitive about beer in a pic? Who? Why? The only thing I would be sensitive about is why you didn't bring me any. Hahaha jk

Stone Brewery was a MLPA supporter, so some people have feelings about it.

Lol! How many people here voted for Obama? Guess we should shun them too for making a terrible mistake! ?

He's the leading factor in banning our lead in fishing equipment, fyi!

Cheers!

Haha luckily no. it did trash around quite a bit when I grabbed the tail but I just held on and lifted it outta the water which helped a bit. It sure did not want to go easily though
