Easy launch through knee high waves. Light breeze from the SSW. Current was flowing out to sea. Water 63 or so. Saw 2 yt landed, 1 on a skiff and one by a yakker. Both fish were huge, I'm guessing easily over 30lbs. I had no success making bait but honestly I didn't try that hard. No yt for me. But on the way out I saw some nervous bait over the kelp and fired a waxwing in to it. Got bumped on the first cast and a little calico on the second. Not much of a fish but I'm claiming it as my first surface fish of '15. Gotta say it felt great to unleash the long rod again. Cali on the surface, sounds like spring time. Mike

I fished the waxwing last year and had success with the smaller size for bass, barriers, and bonito. I never saw any boiling YT to throw the WW at last year, sadly. I've been fishing surface iron for quite a while and gotta say the WW swim like the absolute best light iron imaginable and they swim at every speed. Definitely gonna spend time fishing the WW this year and most likely setting up a dedicated outfit for them. Mike
