Malibu fishing
What can be caught out here? My wife lives in the area with her parents while I am out here on the east coast. Coming home soon. What can I expect in the Malibu area? 10 Minute drive to Neptunes Net on PCH
Assuming Calicos and sand bass maybe sheepshead?

You'll be hard pressed to get any solid info about the "Bu." Big break there makes for some fun launching/landing. A good launch is at Leo but walk South a short ways down the beach, watch out for all the rocks though. I hear Deer Creek is the other good launch, again you have to watch the surf and pick your timing carefully.

Malibu is known for great fishing.
White Sea Bass, Hali's, lings, rockfish, calicos... Launching by Neptune's (county line). Is the best way to reach the popular fishing grounds straight out from the beach. The surf can be pretty scary at times. Watch your days and time it right. A lot of "local" guys (most of them live nowhere near to Malibu) can act a little territorial....just ignore them. Search around for local fishing info...it's out there. Post up your results. |

I posted on the Malibu scene not long ago. I spearfished it alot, never surface fished. As mentioned Deer Creek is nice, with some spontaneous wicked shore break and heavy rollers( I almost died there). The drop off is similar to that of the Shelter Island launch (not as steep but close). The kelp there is all built on structure, compact in comparison but enough to hold fish. Leo is a dope spot too and significantly under fished. You'll see more spearos, surf boards, and shore fisherman out there than yaks. Plenty of kelp to work too. I've seen mentionable leopards, angels, flatties, and some WSB here. Fishing will pick up here in SD before it does there though. And you'll be too busy creaming over your YT you caught to worry about hooking up on a double chuck up north. YT or Rockfish??? It's your freezer.

This is exactly why matt is not allowed to fish malibu. There is a price on his head. The first "local" to beat his ass gets big money.

Lots of great kelp up and down malibu. Drop swimbaits down thru the kelp to look for calicos and rockfish. Work the edges for halibut.
I've never caught a sheepshead out there, but that's mostly cuz I use artificials around the kelp. County Line (Neptunes Net) is a good spot, but it's also a popular surf spot for a reason. As was mentioned, pick your days and time the sets and you should be ok. |
