Disappointed by Yo-Zuri

I ran out of 30lb Seaguar fluor, which I normally use for leader. So instead of stopping to pick some up on the way to the bay fishing, I decided to save some money and use some 30lb Yo-Zuri that I had laying around. Fishing was good this evening. I caught and released 3 nice halibut ranging from about 25 to 30 inches. The I hooked into one that I knew right away when I was pulling it up from the bottom what kind it was and about how large it was. I knew this was going to Beat my personal best. When I got it up where I could see it, it was a huge Halibut that looked like it trumped my personal best of 34 inches by a foot. After getting up and it running back to the bottom three time I tightened the drag. Not 5 seconds later, POP! There goes my leader. Man< I was so disappointed. my heart just dropped. Then right away I Tied another leader on with my hands shaken. I circled around that same area Knowing good and well that I wasn't going to hook up like that again in the same evening. then I just called it a day. Another lesson learned.

The bite is wide open in the bay again. now's the time.

I love that stuff! lol how long have you had it? You know like any other line if you have it laying around for too long it drys up and becomes a bit brittle. I actually like yo-zuri for one specific reason, it's softer then most flourocarbon, which translate to a more natural swim for baits. Killed 40lb + bluefin with 25lb and 30lb yo zuri in pink

Well, it was laying around for over a year. I figured if it was still on the spool it was like brand new. That's good to know though. Thanks. Like I said, it was a lesson learned. I'm going fishing now. I'm stopping to get some new line.

You don’t think the fact that is substantially bigger than any hali you’ve landed before had anything to do with the break?

If I stopped using every brand of line that I ever broke a fish on I would be fishing with a rope.

Quit fugging around with your drag!

Reminds me of the time I hooked up with a HUGE White Sea Yellowtail Hali-Ray. I had it almost to color once when it made another run. It was peeling off drag like there was no drag at all so I tightened it up and SNAP it was gone.

Maybe that and the fact that the line was old. I didn't realize it had a shelf life.

I got her up a few time. Not close enough to the boat to hit her with the gaff before she would run back down.

I hope this doesn't come off negatively but do a search on BWE for a post by Adi, Buttchaser, or GregAndrews on how to land a halibut. There is a YouTube video too I think. It should help a lot.

What's your address? I'll go dumpster diving for it in a heartbeat! Great product and getting harder and harder to find!

Hey CJ. I don't think you want that line it's old. I was told it has a shelf life. That's why it broke. I don't know where you live, but it's in every tackle store I've been in in SD. I just saw it today in both West Marine and Fishermans Landing.

I don't have any Halibut How To Videos on YouTube. Just check the forums for the article that Adi (Lamb) wrote on the subject. That is a great piece and can save most fishermen some Halibut heartache.
