LJ today - 7/3

Skunk-o-Rama...straight up Pepe la Pew....

Nice to meet Honcho and ckallday and other yak drivers out there today. Wish the fish were more cooperative. I had one yt bite in the alley between the kelp patches on the nw corner...which I missed by not letting the thing eat the big Spanish Mack sufficiently before kicking into gear.

Anyone else do any good today?

how do you know how long to let them chew before you swing away? Do you set the hook, or let the fish eat and then run? I guess one of these days I'll hook a big fish and find out.

It was good meeting everybody today down in La Jolla. Even though all I caught was Macs, squid and enough lizard fish to sink my kayak I still had a blast. Had the crap scared out of me by a Hugantic sea dog that decided to pull a full blown flipper maneuver right next my yak.

Went over to check out the La Jolla caves after fishing since it was my first time in the area. Lots of beautiful things to look at, and the cliffs were nice too. Wall to wall hotness on SUPs!

I treat bigger species of fish the same for a hook set, let them chew, gradually button down the drag with a firm wind. There's no ripping of lips for this guy, but everyones style is different. What ever gets your boat bloody!

Good luck!

When to swing? That can be a tough question. Big bait small bait, big fish, small fish. YT generally don't mess around with the bait, I've found any way. 3-5 seconds? But longer is ok. Mike

I was trolling a big honkin Spanish Mack. The yellow grabbed it in the middle and ran, but never ate the head. As I put drag on slowly, it felt like I was on...until the fish let go! This is one case where I should have let him eat on it and take a nap before I put the drag in gear.

Bigger bait = bigger fish? I get it but no, use smaller bait so you hook gets eaten.
