Anybody use a Shimano TranX or Abu Garcia Revo Toro?
Just wonder if anybody has one and has anything good or bad to say about them. |

I had the tranx, then sold it. Now I'm looking to buy another. I switched back to a conventional, and it turns out I'm pretty bad at casting
They cast great and are nice to fish the surface iron with, especially with spectra because you don't need to mind the line on the retrieve. The downside is the price tag, and all the really tiny parts. Thats an expensive reel to either a) drop in the drink, or b) dunk in the surf I'm gonna pick up another sometime as my surface iron reel. |

I was thinking it could do double duty for surface iron and for chunking plastics for calicos ect.
I'm leaning toward the Tranx because I'm a fan of Shimano gear. |

If I had tranX money I wouldve bought one. But I do have a revo toro 50 and it has not disappointed me. Pulled in some 20#-25# yellowfin tuna in baja with it along with yellowtail, dorado, and a big leopard shark out of sd bay. Drag is solid and casts great. Have used the tranX before also. Is it better? Yes. Is it worth what you would pay for it? No. Would be much happier with a trinidad for that price. My two cents

I have the shimano tranx and the shimano 300ej both really good reels. If you get the tranx make sure it's "hg" easier for irons. But I really like the 300ej strong reel and smooth.

TranX would probably be overkill for calico bass and anything else inshore....I use a Curado 300ej....works great

I took my Toro 50 out for some fun on paddies last summer and it was a fun reel to use on the 15-20 lb football YF Tuna.
A true workhorse is you ask me. |

I fish a revo toro nacl 60 series. It is probably my favorite reel. It has enough line capacity and drag for yt and wsb but still small enough to easily cast plastics in the kelp. I troll and fish live bait with it also, just turn on the clicker and wait for it to sing. The Abu is very nice and I am quite happy with it.
I don't have any experience with the Tranx, primarily because I fish left handed and Shimano doesn't offer a lefty Tranx otherwise I would probably own one. Last edited by YakMedic; 06-06-2013 at 06:14 AM. |

I have 2 toro 50's and love them. I fish calicos with 65lb braid tied to 40-50 flouro no issues, great reels. I also have 2 lexa 300s that I like even more than the toros.

Toro NaCl 50 or 60. They both have 22# of drag and are made to fish the salt. I've caught plenty big fish on them and they're still going strong.

That's a sweet combo....I hope TranX comes down in price in the next couple years....I want one for the overnight or 1.5 day trips

It's now been about two years. That being said, would you still pay the $650 cash for that set? And on another note, how has it held up? Thanks

I have the Tranx on the Phenix 809 deckhand wrapped, nice reel and great for casting. I can't throw jigs on the conventional baitcaster but put some 3oz+ jigs with spectra, hardly any birdnest. The HG model help with the quick retrieve. I gotta say I love the setup.
