OB Pier Area

Anyone fish the area between the OB Pier and the mouth of Mission Bay? Thinking about heading out there sometime this week. Anyone interested?

Some nice rock piles between the jetty and kelp if you can find em. I've had better luck off MB near the shipwrecks when the dive boats aren't on it.

What would be the typical catch that I would be looking at? Halibut, calicos, topwater fish? Will probably hit it up later this week

Personally that's my favorite area to fish. I just don't like doing it alone. I can't head out tomorrow, but we'll hook up and do this one soon.

Mostly calicos with a mix of sandies last time I was there. Best bet I'd say 3/4 - 2oz leadheads and rubber of your choice.

I went out there last month to try for halibut. I launched from Dana Landing in Mission Bay and out the jetties - I think that is the closest easy bay launch to that destination. It was the first time using my downrigger, which worked well - though nothing to show for it...

I've looked around the area for a good launch from the surf and have not found one.

The closest launch from mission bay is mission point. Its located right at the start of the jetty on the north side. Beach launch with a short drag from the parking lot. Remember the parking lot closes at 10pm unless you roll with me : )

I wish I was into kayaks back when you guys were "exploring" the possibilities. Imperial Beach launching to get to that kelp just screams at me. I need partners con juevos to check this area out with me. It'd def be stupid to go it alone...until I got comfortable with it...

The only time I attempted IB was with a couple other "originals" probably 12 years ago, we tucked tail that morning.......scary 4 footers breaking 100 yards out

I use to surf and bodyboard at IB, I don't remember any location over there that would be Kayak friendly for launching. We use to jump off the pier to get out beyond the breakers, that wasn't always smart either.

Man I've gotten some of the sickest barrels ever at IB. I've also gotten the deepest sand enemas. There would have to be ZERO swell to have a pleasurable launch there

How long is the paddle out if I launch out of mission bay through the jetty?

Its a popular surf spot. I'll leave it at that...

The length of the jetty channel is 1 mile. If you drive to where Roadx suggested its about 1 1/4 miles to the end of the jetty where you can turn the corner. From Dana Landing its about 2 miles.

I might be going out to the jetty area later this week. I launch out of ventura cove park and paddle out along the jetty. I have been wanting to leave the channel and fish towards the kelp. Normally, I target halibut but I want to go after some of calicos.
