What's Legal?

I'm going to transport my kayak in the back of my pickup truck. How far can the kayak extend beyond the bumper when driving down the highway? Can I just put a red flag at the end?

Thanks for help!

Thanks for the info! Now I won't be so paranoid getting ticketed.

I looked it up a few months ago. I believe its 2/3 of your wheel base beyond the last point of support. So if your wheel base is 12 foot then it can stick out 8 foot from the last point of support. I took that as the end of the tailgate.

4 feet past your tail lights. I got a ticket for my S-14 being 8 feet past my tail light, even with a red flag. MC CHP. But I think I got that ticket cause I tailing the car in front of me. So in my belief he just threw the book at me. Tail gating and over sized load was almost 500 bucks.

X2

Daytime it needs to be flagged and you need 2 red lights at night if you have more than 4' overhang.

Go to the nearest CHP substation or DMV (LOL ) & ask an officer for the specifics, or google DMV regs (CADMV.gov).
FFY.
