Kayak Fishermen Surf Fishing Report 12/17/06

A few of us, probably against our better judgement decided to go surfing on our kayaks... I brought two WS Kaos surf kayaks, Brad brought his Mini X, Adi on the Malibu eXtreme, Pat on his X Factor... Ski showed up just to be entertained...

Some pics....

Adi "Perfect Storm"

Tourist launching...

Brad about to pearl...

Brad in front of a barrel...

I am heading out, these surf kayaks handled fairly well in the surf...

A surf shot, by the way, we surfed right in front of the launch...

Three amigos...

Finally, the Madman!! If this doesn't sell the Mini X, I don't know what will!!

Some video... I got into a couple nice barrels...

Awesome pics and video Chris and Trish!!!

I brought my eX to practice in bigger waves. I’ve never done that, and always wanted to.

eX seems to be able to get me out through and over the bigger waves…

My surf re-entry skills are now certified as non-existent… Or the 15'+ kayak just can't do much good in 3+ breaking waves?

Note to self – stay home or go fish on your boat when the surf is up.

Great stuff Chris/Trish. I'm pretty sore today, but that was great fun.

When we first got down there the surf was as big as I've ever seen at the launch. Pat was having a hard time just getting out enough to turn around. Some of them were even scary on the surf yaks, and I got knocked off my a couple trying to punch out. Mellowed right out by low tide though. We had to stop because therre was nothing to surf. Hopefully the fishing will turn on now, I predict Tues/Wed will see some action.

Nope, you asked whether I base my decision to fish on anything. I don't, I fish regardless. But there are times I'm more optimistic than others, and 2-3 days after a storm has been good to me in the past. Although last year that prediction batted about .500, if I recall.

Yeah, I understood....

Hey... .500 is pretty damn good by anyone's standards!

Great pix, looks like you guys had a blast.

Should have went back to bed when I saw the ice on my windshield.
Well, the fish did not go off today. 2 Bones on the yoyo, offshore breeze around 8 kts died around 9, and warmed up. No signs of life on the surface, lots of cruising gulls. Surf was still thumping by the pier, but 1-2 hightide launch and 1 foot at the landing. There was a 4 foot wall of sand I had to pull the yak up and over to load up.

I was all alone today, no yaks, sporties or PBers. I may try again manana, or Wednesday.

Excellent post Chris. That looks like a lot of fun. We keep telling ourselves to go do that some time, just for the fun of it, and the experience of how to land in larger waves. We missed out.
