Humminbird makes some great units, I hate their cheesy power cable though. For that reason alone I would go with lowrance.

This is going to be a landslide in favor of the HDS.

Take your time in choosing a FF , Go check some out and play with them .. I've had the Hds 5 for over a year now ,I went with the hds because there were no better FF for the price at that time I purchased mine . For the same Price range as the Hds and the HB I would also consider the Raymarine A series . Take a look at the A50D or the A57D ...
Good luck.

Going by the two options above:

If you want the best FF/GPS combo, the HDS-5's detail is ridiculous and the "Trackback" feature is awesome.

If you are looking for an affordable all-in-one (FF/GPS/Down Imaging), then the 597CI HD DI is for you.

Is the hds5 the cream of the crop for non-DI, while the Hummingbird is the bottom shelf of the DI units?

I'm trying to pick between the two myself(to help narrow the field). I think I'd rather have the best of one type vs the budget version of another...

The reviews I've found online haven't swayed me one way or the other, half of the time people want to justify their purchase so they BS their review.

I currently have the HDS5 and have had HB units, while the HB units are nice their quick connect head unit, in our environment, in a yak, do not handle the saltwater very well. I went through 4 HB units in one boat from 718 on up to 385c all had the same problems with the connection at the head unit. I am not
putting HB down at all good product and support, but the Lowrance and Garmin
have a more durable cable connection that so far has not been a problem for me and I am in the water at least 4 times a month...hope that helps, late....b
