My wife no longer works full time and gets to be with our son Josiah who is 3.5.
I hired more staff this year. I landed 3 homes as the builder for architects I once worked for. I opened an office in downtown Ventura. Celebrated 13 years of sobriety. Play? Not much...its been nothing but a grind. I work about 60+ hours a week. Its feast or famine in home building. I take that back. I got out on about 10 charters. Monster lings, reds, a few 30# wsb and a few days of wfo yellow tail in the 25-35# grade...I got one on the iron. I do regret already working so much and not seeing you guys or my family more. Once this economy blows out it should slow back down for me. Till then...get sum! |

First Cow BFT
Great post Bob, some awesome dreams already shared.
I was able to be a part of catching the largest fish of my life, and it will take some time to beat (especially in CA). My buddy Mike runs a kayak charter company (Fish Village) and called me up asking if I was willing to play hooky from work to head out on a 4 pack charter targeting tuna. He used the magical word (FREE!) and without hesitate I let the boss know I would be "sick". Just as my luck normally goes, weather cancelled the original trip and it was pushed at day (to a Saturday..... so the crowds would be out) Well thanks to the amazing guys at Seasons Sportfishing, we were able to hook this beast within 20 minutes of the jumjumflyer hitting the water! As there was 4 of us we took turns reeling on the cow, and after 2:25 minutes it was on the boat. Ended up being 193 gutted, and the gut pile pulled out of this beast was easily 20+ lbs. It nearly straitened a 1/2 inch SS gaff hook while trying to boat it. Amazing day I doubt will be topped in some time..... |

Well, with all this talk about realizing dreams, I just made reservation to redo my dream of fly fishing in Canada. Again.
Like the last time, I am taking Amtrak from LA to Seattle, round trip. Reserved a hotel room a walking distance from the train station. NO MISSING THE COMING HOME train this time. I hope. Then a 8-10 hrs. drive to a city called Fernie, BC. To fish the Elk Valley River and its tributaries. C&R fishing with barbless dry fly. Here is a taste: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8h9R6OU7atQ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jOBFxv4BbNE https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1r8JVjxp30c https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8nrA3QAVo0I Travel dates July 31-August 17, 2017 A long post as usual to follow. THIS - is what happens when you spend too much time sitting on the beach! Take the time to get out and do whatever turns your crank, you'll be better off for it...

Planning a week of kayak camping at Catalina next summer to chase yellows. Finalizing logistics of how to get the kayak over there. Would love to make my first trip down to Baja next year as well.

Unless you can arrange for a private boat to take it, it is nearly impossible. There are rentals though that you can use. The Two Harbors has camp ground a 1/4 mile from the landing, and the kayak store at the landing. At Avalon, there are two places, but you cannot go too far from them. Let us know how you did it. |

Hashem, we met on the mole in Avalon a few years back and it was my first education in California fishing. I hope to fish with you again soon. Last summer we camped in little harbor on the backside of Catalina and fished out of rental kayaks there. It was great fishing but the campsite was very busy. |

Freakin increadible trip...
My dream was kind of rejuvenated this year...after 35 years of crashing around Baja I got kind of bored...went on a whim down to Mako Bobs place last May (and again in Oct), met some great people, had a 100 fish day and caught my personal best rooster...my fire has been re kindled! This could lead to me building a place down there (very long time dream has been to have a place in Baja)....thanks Roberto!!!!

If I see a picture, I may remember better. I meet so many people during my outings. I will be there this Tuesday and Wednesday. |

Bob, thanks for the sentiment. Roosters are on my list of fish to catch. So many excellent sports fishers to target in Baja. Maybe Bufeo roostets next fall. Mike

This has been a year of fishing dreams for me. Bought me a fancy pedal kayak, caught me one them big rooster fishies on the yak, made some new fishing friends, currently packing the car for my fifth Baja run of the year and taking my wife/dtr this time. I can only hope that next year is nearly as good. Roberto Mako, thanks for everything you've done to get me off my ass and fulfilling some dreams!

Paul, you did it, got your wife and lovely daughter to Asuncion.
Jim you made it to Asuncion with a FULLY loaded truck two years in a row. And Jeff you made the trip for a FOURTH consecutive year. Tortilla report? Richard it was year two for you. Jim also found his own fossil shark tooth, and sand dollars. The REST of you guys missed out again. Maybe next year??? Quote:

Not really a dream I had before, but I had two twin daughters at the beginning of the year. I couldn't imagine anything better. Even though they have pumped the brakes on some new found fishing dreams and aspirations. Of course I develop a fishing addiction as my wife is pregnant with twins and money becomes tighter than with just the two of us....figures.
Despite all that, I managed to sweet talk the wife into letting me get a cheap field and stream kayak from Dicks...Not fancy, but it gets the job done, and is a pretty solid base to start customizing off of. Ill take what I can get, as long as it gets me on the water. Between that and sharking used gear online, I set myself up pretty well. Dreams that need to become reality in the near future would include: - making the trek to Makobob's place and learning from some of you guys - making a trip to cedros with one of the outfits out there to do some panga fishing. And getting on a tuna trip next year....money and time restrictions with the babies sidelined me while I watched my buds get out there and score. Was terrible. Also, made my first legit barrel on the surfboard this year. No better feeling. Last edited by DPevin; 12-02-2016 at 02:08 PM. Reason: spelling |

I will be working at the Cedros Outdoors Adventure at the Fred Hall Show.
Stop by for information. I am not an employee, but a satisfied customer who wants to help them. |
