Beginner's luck 7/3. LJ

picked deefeesha up at 4am. got to LJ launch site at 6am. bait was tough at first, and very few people were able to find any. once andrewtp arried at 10ish, us 3 decided to go for some calicos. i had a big bag of fresh frozen chovies so i decided to toss some over and all of a sudden a school of greenbacks came. caught ONLY pacific macs from 10" to whopping 16" torpedos. called other yakkers to come join but nobody listened.

made our way to the yt grounds with about 8-10 macs each.. and it was a struggle against the wind. no hobie = you're dying. finally got there and started to soak the macs. we each get stolen by seals once or twice. i'm soaking my mac at 80ft of water and staring at the New Seaforth pulling up 100yd away. all of a sudden my reel screams and i'm on a big fish. it ran straight down into kelp and i only have 10ft of 20# fluro so i backed off the drag a bit. 10-15min later... towed within 100ft of the cattle boat, 86 viewers at the bow, and with deefeesha's gaff assist, i stick my very first yt on the yak! (42" lenth, 25lbs) i bleed it out right there (later to find out that there was a GWS nearby). we stayed until about 4:30 and each missed a yt. went back to shore, where i flipped my yak. all gear was retrieved. no rods suffered casualties. great first time out at LJ! but now my arms are dead sore.

beginner's luck footnotes: found the best bait. caught first yt. didnt get eaten by GWS. flipped yak with no losses. got stuck in the sand at the launch

I just finished the edits on our video, so he should have it posted soon.

Disclaimer: lots of F-bombs during gaff'in.

Great post and encouragement for those of us who are still working up to our first yt. I'm pretty sure I saw you as you you were driving off the sand at the boat launch...I sad to myself "that guy doesn't want to get stuck...cause he's movin.". Congrats!

Well, that remains to be determined. I guess we'll see how you do on that next trip. And the one after that, the one after that, so on and so forth.

Either way, a win's a win. That's a beautiful fish, bro. I saw you guys out there that day, congrats. Good idea on the 20 lb fluorocarbon...
