I've had my left shoulder surgically repaired twice. The symptoms common with both tears were.

-Pain with range of motion
-Pain with bearing of weight
-Popping sensation with movement of arm forward and back (I had to keep my hand in my pocket while walking to avoid this)
-Pain while sleeping due to shoulder realignment while lying for prolonged time

My first surgery was in 2000, and the MD recommended paddling excercises for therapy. I added the fishing pole myself. Im a paddler, and I plan to stay that way as long as possible.

Good luck on your results
