Weather and Water Is Turning Cold. Whats Your Thoughts On Clothing When Kayaking

I hate those cold foggy mornings at the harbor or worse, beach launch. The air just seems so cold and the water is. I love my fleece hooded jacket that I wear over my down vest. I also may have non cotton thermals on. I never take a chance by wearing anything cotton, even in the summer (for the most part).

Yah, no cotton for sure. I wear a 2mm wetsuit bottom and thick socks under my stockingfoot waders with a belt. I wear a long sleeve UV shirt, then a thicker hooded UV version over that and have a frogg togg hooded top to break the wind....and a knit dome hat. If it's really cold, I stay home, drink coffee and watch youtube fishing videos

Wetsuit bottom is a good idea. I usually just layer up in colder weather, but I know if I were to roll, having all those layers on would be really bad in the water. So I might invest in one of those for trips up North or just extra cold days here. Anyone have good suggestions for gloves though? Sucks going in and out of my livewell with wetsuit gloves because then my hands just stay wet and cold all day. It's difficult to rig any gear when you can't feel your fingers haha

Never really thought of wetsuit pants. Thats a good idea cuz I rarely want to go in full wetsuit even up north. I would always have my top down (which I see so many others do) but whats the use of the suit if I fall over wearing it that way.

As for gloves I really like fleece gloves with the fingers that come off and converts to mittens for even more warmth. So you get warm material that does not absorb water and my fingers can be free for feeling the line, lipping a fish, etc. https://amzn.to/3RvY3eH

no matter the month when otw in winter the sun always seemed to make an apperance so I always opted for waders full body overall straps and as the sun came out I would shed layers and tuck them away in the hatches.. rolled multiple times too many yard sales to talk about from La Jolla to Malibu and never once was in fear of drowning cause my waders took on too much water, which happened unfortunately on several occasions

But didn't your waders take on water when you went overboard?

Even in Florida, we will have days with 40 degree temps and wind. The water will still be in the 70's, but with the cold wind, you need protection. I have neoprene shoes and pants, and a pull over neoprene hoodie that I wear on colder days.

There is NO danger of drowning if you fall in the water while wearing waders. The water that might get in (if you don't wear and adjust properly the belt that should go around you're chest area) is not any heavier than the surrounding water. What you can't do is lift yourself above the surface of the water(only if a large amount of water got inside) the weight of that water would prevent you from lifting yourself back in the kayak. If that was to happen, you would just remove the waders while still in the water and then climb in the kayak. Jim Sammons, many years ago posted videos of this while showing it in a swiming pool.
