Kayak Fishing The Dana Point Kelp Beds For Sheephead

Rock Fish season opened on March 1st and I finally made it out to target Sheephead!!

It felt so good to get out on the open water and put some miles in. This was my first long distance trip since my knee replacement surgery.

The goal was to peddle 3-4 miles north of the harbor and clip onto the kelp. Conditions were near perfect but the bite was pretty slow. That’s ok because I was able to put a few on the kayak and I felt pretty good.

Please have a look at my video, like, and please subscribe! The season just started and there’s lots more to come!

What a beautiful day off Dana Point. Good to see you out there and glad that your knees are well recovered.

Looks like a fun day. I was just walking the Strands beach yesterday and the wind was howling and the surf was big. What a difference a day can make on the Pacific.

I would like to head over there for the first time in the next few weeks. Does that whole length of beach (strands and salt creek) all have some kelp?

Thanks for the video.

Yes! You will find patches in 30-50’ of water and the most productive is right around where the strand and salt creek meet. Good luck!

How do you know when you are in waters legal to fish? How far offshore are you?
