New Video: Yellowtail at La Jolla

Go my first Yellowtail on the kayak in La Jolla last weekend and happened to capture the whole thing on the GoPro from hookup to gaff. So I figured I might as well edit a video with the footage for fun and thought a few of you here might enjoy the result. It was a fun fight with a couple good runs! Didn't realize it was all filmed in 4:3 aspect ratio unfortunately, but I'll be sure to double-check that in the future!

Whole video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SHybsMVZ2Mw

And for those of you that want to skip the BS and see the good parts, here you go:

Hookup: https://youtu.be/SHybsMVZ2Mw?t=90

Big run(my favorite part of the vid!): https://youtu.be/SHybsMVZ2Mw?t=167

Powerful head shakes: https://youtu.be/SHybsMVZ2Mw?t=235

Landing: https://youtu.be/SHybsMVZ2Mw?t=280

Final clips in the video are from a different day because my GoPro battery died while filming the actual beach landing, but I don't think anyone really cares. Unless you spot yourself on the beach, but weren't there on 9/20!

Anyway, thanks for watching!

So sweet!! Sound of the drag is intense!
Looks like you were trying a yoyo (surface?) but the live one got bit. Flyline or did you drop it down?

Yeah, I love that sound! Never gets old... And yes, I had that heavy rod rigged with a 4oz Tady, but it really should've been a surface iron in that moment.
Was putting it away and reeling in my flyline Spanish to swap it for a fresh one when it got bit. Opened up the drag a little to let it take it all the way, then tightened it up again to let the circle hook work it's magic

Great video. Love the bendo action. Great fight action and that Yellowtail gave you a great workout. Great gaff shot. Coming in with all those tourist that are out of control of their kayaks, is a cluster fu**. Even worse when there are idiots swimming in the landing zone.

Thanks! I don’t mind letting them run a bit... but not TOO much

To be perfectly honest, I don’t think catching yellowtail from a boat will ever be the same... it’s exponentially more fun in a kayak!

Thanks! Glad you enjoyed the video. Production value not exactly top-notch, but I’m not going for any academy awards here lol. This one made some nice fillets and I made sure to spread it around to friends and family that I know will use use it right away. To me that’s one of my favorite parts(next to catching the fish of course!).

Dude... I don’t know how you land your skiff there without mowing down at least 4-6 tourists. It’s bad enough in a kayak. Either you’re just a pro or you’re crazy(or both??)! I feel like if I had anything bigger with a motor, I’d end up in prison for involuntary manslaughter after making speed bumps out of a few people and taking out a few kneecaps along the way...
And thanks, glad you enjoyed the video. Was stoked the footage came out as good as it did! Just wish the aspect ratio wasn’t set to 4:3, but I’ll have that fixed in future videos (assuming I’m lucky enough to catch another soon!).

Thanks! The Seeker rod was custom made. I love the rope handles for this type of rod. They just feel good in the hand!
