9/17 O'side harbor

Yesterday I went up to O'side harbor so I could test out a Hobie peddle yak.
I picked up a yak from Nate. He set me up with a brand new '09 Outback.
That is a nice boat. Don't know how anyone can fish while using a paddle. OK maybe it was becasue I was throwing plastics the whole time.

Anyway, first time ever to the harbor. I was a bit slow in getting going but once on the water after 11am I went straight towards the red rock on the inside of the jetty. Fished there for a little bit until the surge got bad and wind started blowing me back into the harbor.

I finally just let the wind push me down the jetty on the other side.
Got to where the "rock" bouys are and caught a whopper. (see the pict blew). At least my first yak fish was a nice YT (a couple years back). Lost another one in that area and missed a couple more.

Don't know if it was just me not knowing the areas or what but it was a bit slow. One that one fish for about 3 hours. Only my second yak trip so it was not a full 3 hours of solid fishing.

I saw a lot of "bait" sized dines, mac, herring, or what ever following my bait to the yak. Can these be easily caught for using as bait? And is that worth the effort or is it just best to stick to plastics?

I want to go out again in a few weeks. Anyone fish O'side on a M/W/F midday? I can get a yak at 10am and be at the ramp shortly after that and fish until about 2.
Would love to find some good spots and get some technique tips.
I used to do a lot of freshwater bass fishing and a lot of party boats but only have done bay fishing about a dozen times.
I have a lot to learn about setting up a drift, etc.
