I’ve seen that CL posting too. The solo one is hefty for its length. I think getting something like a used OK Prowler or Wilderness Tarpon would be a better deal.
It’s interesting that they also have a pedal model on their website. Everyone is jumping in the bandwagon. |

There seems to be a lot of Made in China kayaks popping up..........I'd at least stick to Bass Pro Shops or Dick's ones that you can have some kind of local support when you have an issue.

As someone in the product development business, I feel like I should make you all aware of how pervasive the problem is with Chinese knock offs. They aren't just messing with notable companies like Native but even stealing from students. Basically if you come up with cool idea, they will steal it. Here's a good read on the subject. http://www.core77.com/posts/45291/Fl...esign-Knockoff

I not a big fan of China copying items, but hard to dismiss when prices are unbeatable for certain things. But so much is made over there now its hard to stay loyal. I don't mind the weight as my son can easily pick this thing up over his head 1 handed if he needed too. But almost all SOT kayaks that I've shopped for and have been PM'd about don't have a raised seat and I know from experience wet shorts and fishing aint fun.

After finding out it's a cheap Chinese knockoff you are still considering it?

Raised seat = higher center of gravity = more tippy. I’d rather have a wet butt than take a dip
I wear splash pants to avoid swampass. |

There's a distinction between owning legitimate foreign made goods and knowingly participating in the counterfeit/knockoff market.

Amen. I work in Manufacturing Planning/Material Control and run into counterfeit material issues all the time (we have very strict "Made in USA" configuration requirements.) This problem has gotten especially worse the last few years. We've gone from one or two issues a year to one or two issues A MONTH...

Just buy it already...Sounds like your mind was already made up before you started this thread. Don't worry what people think about your Chinese made knock-off kayak. If it sucks and you don't like it buy a name brand one preferably from OEX. No need to have to defend yourself for buying what you want.

I know it's late to adding anything, but being new to kayaking and not knowing if I would like it or not, buying the BKC single for only $600 was a good way for me to break in. I've had it for only 2 months but have enjoyed being back out on the water. It has everything that I needed to start and I can add on. If I still enjoy kayak fishing in a year or so I'll be looking for nicer one. But to break in, and especially if it's for a son of daughter that might out grow it, its a sweet deal. And at that price you can always resell it and not lose too much. Not a popular opinion but it's mine.

Would you really consider having your child in a knockoff? I mean, kayaking and being on the water alone is dangerous enough sometimes and sure even brand name kayaks may have issues, but definitely less likely to be the case.
You gotta imagine that these knockoffs are cutting all kind of corners to shave a buck and might not have the best quality control, meaning all kinds of bad shit may happen. I understand the budget aspect of it, but why not just buy a decent used kayak from reputable company for about the same price? I'd rather take used and reliable vs new and potentially unreliable. |
