A beautiful summer morning......

I finally launch at 5:30a.m as planned (thursday 7/24/08), to see what I've been missing.

A beautiful summer morning (my first a.m. session in a long time), with light wind and a "couple" of nice fish, for quite a few anglers. I never had a shot with my target species, but lost two of my favorite jigs to sharks . After a few quiet hours and nothing to show, I left the productive grounds of the past few days. I headed across the canyon to make some quality bait for Halibut fishing. Smokey and I set up a couple drifts with horse Sardines, and surface greenbacks. The hours passed and the conditions deteriorated as the afternoon progressed ( more wind, more grass on the surface etc). Smokey really wanted a fish and stuck it out until around 3:00 p.m. Ten minutes after he leaves I get short bit from a halibut (my first real strike in nine hours,YEAH!). I sent the Sardine back down and he's thumped instantly, then let's go. I start to wind after a while and get about 30' off the bottom and the rod loads up, he's back. A funny fight all vertical and weird and then balistic, but I was stoked to see a nice Halibut below. After much debate I decided to let her go to build my Halibut karma for the rest of summer (this works). The conditions got worse in this area, after an hour of obligatory drifts, so I left in search of cleaner conditions. I made another move, and the most epic frightened school of bait appears out of nowhere and was moving pretty quick. I moved just ahead of the nervous school and brought in my tired, but georgious horse Sardine. I grabbed a fresh lively bait and dropped her down as the frantic school of bait surrounds me. My bait started thumping as she enters the zone, ten seconds later I'm slammed. An amazing challenging fight on the Penn 500 Jiggmaster (makes you appreciate Torium speed) with four or five big runs that I could barely keep up with. When she came to color I could tell I caught a larger version of my last trophy, so I'm obviously stoked!

Take a good look at the motor on this fish, a slow retrieve reel isn't a good match, but plenty of fun.

Hmmm, I might just sleep in for the rest of summer.

Josh, you are the man!
Great report, awesome fish.
When I go out on the water I call it fishing.
When you go out it should be called catching.
