Who's Interested 1 March?

Having a friendly last minute rockfish throw down. Just do a MBF thing. The person with the biggest 10 fish sack takes it all. Meet up at the beach at say 5:30-6am meet back up at the launch at 1-2pm. $5-$10-$15 buy-in? Comment for any takers. Doesn't matter if only a few guys wanna get in on it or 30 guys.

We are thinking 8 rockfish and two other specis of choice for a ten fish total. So example you can do 10rocks, 8rocks-2ling, or 8rocks-1wht fish-1sheephead. However you wanna combine them.

Jeff,

I'm in. I look forward to having the opportunity to launch from LJ for the first time and a little bit of company to paddle out with.

I'm curious if anyone would like to chime in on what type of setup they recommend using for rockfish.

Rod and reel and main line size

Line and hook size/type for the rigs, sinker weight

Bait? Frozen/Fresh/Live. What type?

Thanks!

I found this link on dropper loop rigs with some good advice from the OP. Not sure I'll have the time to tie up anything as fancy but I'll get something together.

http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwevb/s...t=dropper+loop

BTW do you all recommend using a three way swivel to run the hook off the main line or using a dropper loop knot, cutting one end of the loop and running that to the hook?

That'll work but you can keep it simple. For me, anything deeper than 150' I will use my Sealine 20 with a dropper loop, 99.999999999% of the time I will fish one hook but I won't give up my baiting secret. Don't over complicate the process, rod, reel, sinker and hook, that's all you need.

Chances are I will join the tournament, I need another big check to go with the one I have

You can try increasing your chances and use a jig (with one treble hook) instead of a sinker on a single hook dropper loop rig. (Can only have one treble hook if combined with one dropper loop - two hooks total max allowed- treble counts as one).

But of course you also increase your chances of snagging the bottom, kelp, etc.

Live bait is good on your dropper loop. Or dead squid strips on a shrimp fly. Or cut mackerel.

I know JeffB also swears by the Lucanus type jigs. Those fill your two hook max by themselves. So far my personal experience is that live bait outfishes the Lucanus type jig, but I've caught fish on them.

(And JeffB is apparently the Man when it comes to rockfish and lings, so maybe I need to learn from him how to fish those Lucanus jigs better)

I hope that this weather forecast isn't accurate for this weekend. We could use some sunshine for the rockfish opener.

Jeff, my PB plans for Sunday fell through, so depending how shitty the conditions are, I might come out to LJ.

NOAA NWS currently says:

SUN WIND SW 10 TO 15 KT. WIND WAVES 3 FT IN THE MORNING... BECOMING 2 FT OR LESS. SWELL W 3 TO 5 FT. CHANCE OF SHOWERS.

I think it might be worth reevaluating on Saturday. It's possible it will blow through earlier?
