Yeah, they're equally at home tossing live bait or the iron. I've used the C338-5 on a 9' glass calstar for slinging iron on the slide when fishing the cattle boats. The C338-5 would be the better choice because of its line capacity, 300 yds of 40# mono. They've got a graphite spool and spin exceptionally free. Are you pretty familiar with conventional reel casting?

For decades Newells were the go to surface iron reels in So Cal. 338, 332, and super narrow 322 were what most deck hands used. More modern reels have more power and drag but I still think nothing can out cast a decently maintained Newell. Simple, light, and tough. What's not to like? Mike

I agree Mike! I've loved them but a couple of wrecks and several years of blacksmithing and bladesmithing have taken their toll. Now I'm forced to swap out my R-handed reels for lefties...oh well, could be much worse. I'm still fishin' so I'm counting my blessings!

![]() ![]() Then I found the Penn 112 3/0 for 30# ![]() But I still own 3 of the 322's (one with a Tiburon frame and aluminum spool). They're similar to the Penn 500's inside, quick and simple to work on! FFY ![]() |
