That fixed it but if that was the result of only a couple casts in the surf then this isn't the reel for me. I returned the reel and will be looking for a salt specific model.

If you want a reel that has tight tolerances and is saltwater worthy, check out the Tibor line of flyfishing reels. They're expensive, yes... but they are the best IMHO.
