It's not very scientific. After my close call back on the Rock Fish Derby I have a new set of guidelines that I will follow. Rain is not big deal, I can handle that, but if the water is beyond rough, you stay on land. Use your eyes more than anything, and check the weather reports as well. This high wind advisory has been in place for days now. I know the saying goes, "Any day fishing is better than a good day at work." Not if you're putting your life on the line it's not.

Opinions aside, here's the tools I use
Weather reports
Tide charts
wave predictions
my own vision and common sense
listen to the weather report on your VHF radio before launching

I hope the guy is safe, and all is well here on out.
