Friday

Looks like, after waaaaay too long, I get to get on the water this Friday the 27th. Anyone looking for company? Thinking Cabrillo or Dana. More familiar with Cabrillo, but willing to hit somewhere else. Launch around 6:30 or so?

Anyone else planning on getting out?

Very cool. If you don't mind me tagging along & learning a bit about Dana. I was planning on stopping by OEX afterward to drop off the kayak to become part of the HoW fleet.

Dana Launch Intel

Been a long time since I have been to Dana Point. Looking to go out of the boat ramp, which I have not done before. What's the scoop? $10, smooth bills I got. What's the bait situation & cost? Head North or South? Not looking for secret spots, just enough to get me in the right direction smoothly tomorrow morning. Enter off Embarcadero or Golden Lantern?

Thanks!

It costs $10 to do the boat launch. Machine takes $5 and $10 bills.

Bait is $10 for a kayak scoop, plus a tip. Right now the bait is a mix of everything (50% chovies, the other 50% is a mix of greenbacks, sardines and Spanish). Bait is very cured and healthy.

If you want to skip a scoop, there is also a good amount of bait to be made inside and outside the harbor. Good size smelt around the bait dock, and nice greenbacks and Spanish north of the harbor near the kelp.

If I were going out, I'd head out to the pipe, or North toward the headlands. Pipe is easy to find right now, due to all the buoys. I got about a 30lber in about 70 feet earlier this week on a greenback, so the fish are out there.

Good luck

Hey man...did you make it out?
Sorry I never made it...had a household of teenage drama break out late last night with my daughters. There was just no way I was gonna be able to get up at 4:30am.
How did you do?
Weather good?
Swell?

Weather was great, pretty smooth until mid afternoon. Water about 58 degrees.

I thought I was heading to the pipe but had it stuck in my pea brain that it was southward along the shore. Not until I made a call at the yellow pole did I realize I was in the wrong direction. Added a few miles to the paddle. No fish for me but a great, and long overdue, day on the water. A couple of raked baits and they got nervous a couple times.

Hopefully I have some good karma on the way for 2014. Today was teh goodbye trip on the blue prowler, which is now on the way to Heroes on the Water. Hopefully they can put more fish on it than I did, which shouldn't be too hard.

Now to start rigging the Trident.

Shawn,

A very noble gesture on your part. I will make sure it gets down to CJ with all the extra goodies next week. Good seeing you!
