North County Door Mat
I headed back out monday to investigate with some knowledge gleaned from the forum and a handful of live smelt. First bait in the water was down two minutes when it got bit. Pretty classic bite because i was on the phone with my girl at the time and she got to hear the commotion. The fish went 36" and 21# and made for an awesome bbq last night with friends. That surf looks pounding.
Can't believe that you survived it. Great fish on the first drop of the day. |

Nice fish. Great looking fillets. Cleanly done. I'm getting hungry just looking at the pictures.

Thanks for all the kind replies guys. I'm still on a lil fish high cause that was actually my first legal from the yak! I fish salmon in the summer and the Alaskan natives have showed me a couple tricks to cleaning halibut. @gregandrews i remembered the cheeks right after i took the picture. All the bones, the cheeks, engawa, and other miscellaneous scraps i incorporated into a humble fishermans stew with fennel and saffron, c-bad clams and mussels, silver salmon and chunks of salmon lox I had homepacked this summer. We also did grilled hali tacos with a heirloom tomato pico de gallo and a halibut and salmon lox crudo for an appetizer. All my friends seemed stoked and we all got a good chuckle from the video. I had gone out on monday in the hopes of securing some taco meat but i didn't think i'd get that much on the first and what turned out to be only drop of the day. Called it quits and paddled in right after cause i figure fish stay fresher in the ocean than in my freezer. With the flat conditions the past week or so I was able to hit this spot a few times for some fun bassin. My girl even got in on the action one day and got a too pretty to keep cabezon but i really got lucky on monday. Even a blind chicken can scratch up some corn every now and then i guess!

I personally, would've hooked and handed off that butt to your girl... I think.. But maybe that's just the way I am.... Regardless, welcome to the madness. Great job on the fish. Jim

She wasn't with me when i got that fish but she would take a passed pole as an insult. She likes to do it all herself, kinda hardcore like that, haha. Took her to castaic once and she flipped and lost her pole, but she wouldn't give up, and ended up catching a bigger bass than the boys that day!

Hahahhaha! Totally joking with the newbee. I figure my only shot to influence or embarrass anyone will be with the FNG's. Jim
