Grunion Run

Next week is next to last grunion run of the season, Bertha Butt should be around with her sisters. Might find her off the beaches. Good luck.

Grunion are small Smelt like fish that breed in the shore sand when the tide and moon are right. Predatory fish, I.e. Halibut come into the surf zone to eat the Grunion.

You are allowed to catch Grunion by hand on the nights that they come ashore. It's a So Cal tradition.

Grunion schools like any bait other fish before coming in to mate. Where do you go, that's always a good question but there is no exact science as to what beaches they will visit. But if there was a run on that beach already this summer it is a good bet they'll come back this summer.

You catch grunion for bait. If you don't catch any use something that looks and swims like a grunion where the grunion were the night before.

The times given for each date reflect the probable two-hour interval during which a spawning run may occur. The second hour is usually better. The best runs normally occur on the second and third nights of a four-night period.

The times given are Pacific Daylight Savings Time. They refer to the grunion runs at Cabrillo Beach near the Los Angeles Harbor entrance. The timing of the runs varies at different places along the coast: San Diego runs occur about 5 minutes earlier and Santa Barbara runs occur about 25 minutes later than the times provided here.

REMINDER: During the open season, a California fishing license is required for persons 16 years and older. Grunion may be taken by hand only. No holes may be dug in the beach to entrap them. There is no bag limit, but take only the fish you can use - it is unlawful and unethical to waste fish.

August 6-7-8-9.
Tuesday: 9:35 p.m. - 11:35 p.m.
Wednesday: 10:10 p.m. - 12:10 a.m.
Thursday: 10:40 p.m. - 12:40 a.m.
Friday: 11:20 p.m. - 1:20 a.m.
