Never had much luck with the surface iron unless it was a school of breezing hungry fish , I've caught most on yoyo iron (My favorite outfit used to be a Penn 4/0 Special narrow on a Truline D-8 , now I use a BeastMaster 12/30=the original TLD 30 2-speed mounted on a Calstar 665H w/60# Hollow Ace & Seaguar 60# fluorocarbon top-shot ) .
Just my experience.

There are many great surface iron rods out there; I had the befor mentioned calstar 90J with an old Newell 338. That was my go to until it got stollen. I'm using a seeker ulua 93H with a daiwa SL40HV now. Its a huge rod and took some getting used to but I love it now. Old school long rods were designed to fish from large party boats. Casting a 100J or ulua while sitting in a kayak can be bit awkward. If you have a buddy with a surface iron stick ask to use it and see if you like the feel. Mike
