Oceanside Dive & Kayak has all your spearfishing needs, and even runs classes/clinics for beginners.

spearfishing
I highly recommend OEX at Mission Bay or Sunset. Brent and his crew or Andy will hook you up. You won’t meet finer people. OEX sponsors this site.

I used to do alot of it out of the kayak, and probably will do a bit more later this year.
But be advised that it is alot more than simply jumping in and shooting them as they swim by. You'll be spending the first year developing your hunting and breath hold skills with not alot to show for it. It's like anything else - the seasoned experts make it look easy. I say go for it, on those clear water days the things you see make the whole trip worth it, even if you don't connect. Get a medium size gun for the kelp clipped off to a float thats towed behind you. The float alerts boats that you are there, and if you connect with a tanker the gun is tied off and won't get lost. You don't want a reel for the hunting you will be doing. |
