Though current squid reports are about as common as current fish reports, when the squirts are out there in good volumes, very often, so are the whites.
If you're not in the loop (we aren't), your best bet, since you live in Oceanside, would be a drive to La Jolla the night before you MIGHT go, say around midnight. If you see the very bright lights of what appear to be squid boats working outside of the south point of the reserve, then it may be worth a try going the next night.
Another note, for $10 some of the squid boats will give you all the live squid you'll need for the day, plus enough for fresh dead on your next couple of trips.
