Not too sure but it sounds like Movie Maker is compressing your video, check your export / rendering settings (if it has any...). Adobe Premiere is great, but pricey.
As far as I know VLC is only a media player, and not for editing

Getting nowhere at that link George. After you fill in your name and email and hit submit, nothing happens.

I just tried and got the same results....tried it a second time but this time I selected 'Yes, I want to receive news from GoPro' and the download button appeared.
