Wind - pay close attention

Sure, the launch looks GREAT right now, but take a look at the wind:

http://w9if.net/cgi-bin/torreywx/wx.pl

I knew the wind was coming in today, but not as early as it did. In other words, don't believe the weatherman 100%, give some wiggle room.

As I went out at 0'dark thirty, it was beautiful, pretty calm, a dry launch. Coming in early and the wind started picking up. By the time I got to the launch, the wind was at 25-30mph. It was a tough pedal with the offshore wind and waves. Without the Hobie, might have been in Catalina by now.

Talking to the lifeguard at the launch, they halted all launches, and we're in the middle of rescuing three swimmers, and two recreational Kayaks.

Good Advice!

I got caught in some bad offshore wind fishing out past the headlands at DP.At full paddle sprint I couldnt make 1.5 mph.I was wearing out and instead of paddling at an angle(shortest as crow flies to the harbor mouth)I went perpendicular straight to the long wall which broke the wind.Closest I have ever been to hitting the Red(Ch 16)button for sure.

Wind sucks!

Head North and fish blacks area. Usually wind protected during offshore events

I was out there Friday and everything was calm, then out by the canyon the wind whipped up like crazy. I paddled hard as I could straight into the wind and managed about a inch a minute for about 10 minutes. I paddled to the kelp to hang on and rest.

The life guard came out on his sea doo and I thought for sure they were going to tow me in, he looped around me and waved I waved back and he took off.... NO!!!!!!!!

I managed to struggle and crash on a beach on the point because no way was I able to make it straight in. I stowed everything in the hull to cut down on drag and launched after a 30 minute break and it took me 45 minutes of fighting back to the launch but I made it and to the cheers and high fives of the guys loading up the rental kayaks on the beach.

I have a bone to pick with that weather man, and am investing in a VHF before I head out again for sure!

Luckily I was in my new x-13. If I were in my old Tandem there is no way I would have made it in.

Saw you, I was in the grey X 13. We were the only 3 yaks out there. Headed in just as it turned on. Wet paddle for sure. It seemed manageable inside the point, wondered how it was further out.

Yeah, I left the canyon area because it looked real slow and went off the point to the kelp there. It got really killer, when the gusts were going it was about 4-5 ft swells. I paddled hard just to make it in the point

Two things were going through my mind out there
1. I'm not dying like this
2. I'm earning a big fat told ya so

As I was rigging everything up in my hotel room I had the local news on and they were saying how the wind conditions had been downgraded and to pect gentle breezes and up to 10mph gusts
