Tidelands, 10-3-11
Well for the first time in a few years I got to Tidelands. Landwhale and I launched a 6am to scattered clouds and the north wind already blowing. Water was 68º+ and a bit dirty. We started at the first dropoff and worked our way out and down to the bridge for a few fish for Steve and one legal for me. I worked the bridge for a while and Steve drifted on. I got a few legals and shorts and then noticed someone outside of his yak. He seemed to be struggling so I paddled over and gave him a few suggestions and collected some random debris. He got back in and having no rods left headed in. (sorry about your loss).
Headed back to my spot and pretty soon soon Steve returns and tells me it's a fish every cast where he's been. So, we head over there and sure enough this shoal was going off. Not a lot of legals, but it was active. We stayed out there for a couple hours and had all the fish you could want. When Steve hit 50, he switched to the blade, having no luck with the blade myself I stayed with what I had on. Besides his first drift had him 26 fish, I was behind. At some point I got another legal and decided to head back to the bridge to look for more of them. Steve joined me and we worked the bridge. Eventually we were back where we started the day, and finished off working that same dropoff. When we landed (1pm) Steve had at least 70 spots to my 50 or 60. Most of these were shorts. We both had short butts and I also pulled a short calico and a lizard. While I tried a few different baits, 3" and 4" Flurrys in Gums and Baitball were what took down the legals. The shorts didn't seem to mind what color, as long as it was a small swimbait. Over all I had a blast and can't wait to go back again.
