Unhappy Throwing around the Iron.. recommendations?

Went out recently and tried throwing a Salas Iron with my Calstar 8ft rod and an Avet JX w/ 40lb(Izorline XXX). Casting distance was really pathetic and felt pretty awkward trying to sling it from the yak.

What do you guys recommend for rod/reel/line selection so that I can actually get some distance? I would like to keep the high retrieve 6:1 ratio and I've heard regular Izorline works pretty good but not sure if I should go with 30 or 40lb, thanks...
