on a serious note. are there any beaches that are known to have a calm and angry side? like one section is full of waves and then a bit north/south its usually pretty calm. just so i can go and get thrashed around then get serious and take the easy way out and maybe fish?

LJ is perfect for this. The waves are always smaller right in front of the launch... if you go a little north or south they are pretty much always bigger. Suggest south - the lifeguards might get a little worried if you venture into the "swim" zone to the north. You don't have to go far, maybe 300 yards or so.
I occasionally take my yak out after a day fishing just to play in the surf with no gear. Makes it fun instead of terrifying
and great practice for those bigger days.
