Big fish, wrong kind
Fished la jolla with my buddy Brian on wed. We did the afternoon launch. We seen some guys coming in and asked for the dope. Skunk for all who went out early. Made bait really quick on the edge of the kelp, spanish , with a couple of greenbacks, plan was to fish afternoon yellow bite and then try and get a seabass for the dusk bite we had heard about. \
Drop back a spanish to troll out to yellow grounds, one minute later click clicl cliiiiiiick!. ripping run, set the hook and here comes the slay ride! @ first I think its a yellow. It took off like a batt out of hell, after a huge run I settle in for the fite. I start to feel a big thumping tail beat, so now im thinking seabass. 25 minutes later with lots of give and take. I have the sad realization that its not the coveted white i was hoping for. After a 40 minute battle I meet my nemisis.. We estimated the black seabass to be between 80 to 100 lbs. we revive the suka and send him on his way. Back to the plan, we paddle to the yellow grounds, all the way there we see birds working and guys bent. As we paddle into the zone a nice guy on a lite blue panga style skiff tells us we just missed all the action, he says, "you guys should have been here 2o minutes ago" DOH!!!! we work the grounds for nada. we head to the kelp to try our luck. we set up shop. one bait high, one bait low. I see some good meter marks every 20 or so minites, the baits get nervous but no biters. we see a diver come up[ with a 45lb seabass. he tells us, "you guys are in the right spot, fish are here, just not biting" he says he seen more than 30 fish just cruising. oh well we fish til dark and head in.. good times in la jolla. next time well get em.
