Marine Radio

I was just given an ancient marine radio, (Apelco VHF510). I have never had one of these before but like the potential safety that carrying an emergency radio on my yak will provide. I read the manual and have learned how to use the device but am wondering about which channels are the best to monitor.

Are there a couple channels that most people use when talking with one another while fishing off shore? Is there an emergency channel that is monitored by the CG, Lifeguards or other emergency services?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Bob
