Our favorite 'But hole
Late post for our Saturday's fishing adventure.
We went to Dana Point, since, the water seems to be too cold for La Jolla to turn on yet. Fished all day, again, and Julie's magic comes through with this 8lb. 'but: We met Brian, another new yakker, who fished with us for a while. Nice to meet you Brian. He hung out long enough to watch Aaron fight the eel that rocked him for 15 minutes, or so. Brian left, but Aaron finally got his eel worked out. Whoopee! The high hopes of a halibut wrapped in kelp were dashed. We missed catching a legal halibut on our previous trip, 10 days ago, when the grunion inundated the beach. It was no wonder the halibut weren't hungry that day. We found thousands of dead grunion on the beach. Even the seagulls were too full to eat them. But, this day we found many more biters to our liking. Only 1 legal, but a couple dozen shorts, plus the strangest variety of by-catch. Our final tally: 1-Seal (long-line released) hook straightened, that'll learn 'em 1-eel, released 1-sculpin 1-20" WSB, released 1-14" Spotted Bay Bass, released 1-short barrie, released 1-small butterfly ray, released Many short 'buts, released 1-8lb halibut (woohoo!) It's hard work, but somebody's gotta do it 8)
