To answer the OPs question the sonar on your fish finder shoots its signal down into the water is a cone shape, usually straight down( wherever the transducer is pointing). Therefore any returns you are seeing on the fishfinder is the signal bouncing back from any object the signal strikes within that cone below the kayak. It is not really possible to tell the direction. The area farthest to the right on your screen is the most recent returned signal.


In my opinion the "fish finder" is not the right name for it. I don't really use it to find the fish. It's more of tool to provide you with additional information, water temperature, structure location, knowing if you are on hard bottom or soft bottom an knowing if there are fish somewhere below in the water column. Fish swim, and they swim fast. By the time you're marking them on your sonar and get a bait down in the water they can be 100 feet away.
