If you carry a phone, get the app called FishAlerts!
It maps the MPA's precisely and you can see exactly where you are in relation to the boundaries. Also has an excellent current summary of regulations per fish. My understanding is that it's legal to catch bait with hooks in the protected zone around Scripps Pier but not the protected area in La Jolla Cove: https://www.wildlife.ca.gov/Conserva...servation-area https://www.wildlife.ca.gov/Conserva...marine-reserve (note: "during daylight hours" for launching through the Matlahuayl MPA.
