vhf radio help - Kayak Fishing Adventures on Big Water’s Edge

So I recently purchased a vhf radio (standard horizon hx300) at west marine. I followed the manual to setup the radio but I am not sure if I set it up correctly. I never use a vhf radio in my life.

My questions are:

Is it normal that I dont hear anyone talking on the radio or do I need to go to a certain channel to hear someone talking?

What channel can i do a RADIO CHECK?

What channel mostly anglers use while on the water?

All I know channel 16 and 9 are for emergency correct me if im wrong.

Please educate me on how to use this device. Thank You!
