Thresher Shark Fishing Gone Wrong - Newport 8/11
Went out of Newport Harbor today in hopes of catching thresher sharks outside the bay. Headed out of the bay after making bait and went right parallel to the shore heading towards the pier. We were probably 3/4 of a mile off the beach and 1.5 miles from the jetty slow trolling macs and around 7:30 I got hit and was surprised when I got it to color and saw it was a yellow. I've been fishing Newport for years and this is the first time I've seen yellows caught that close to the harbor...especially this size of fish. It must've been hungry, or stupid, because we were fishing with steel leaders. My fish missed my bait and got hooked in the eye so it was sketchy gaffing it.
On our way in my cousin got hit as well and pulled up his yellow. He managed to not hook the fish in the eye, but barely had the fish hooked with his stinger hook. Another stupid fish for biting on a 3 foot steel leader again. Both fish went 16 pounds on the dot. Both caught within 2 hours of fishing. Decided to head in at 1 yellow each because we didn't want any more meat but they're still out there. No threshers today, but we'll take it. |
