Crazy happenings in Huntington harbour
We just got home from a little over a week in the sierras were we slayed the trout only to find my buddy got a new X factor! Of course we have to go check it out. After a full day of driving home and unloading the trailer last night grabbed a couple winks and it's already time to fish!
Take a lazy day trip down to HH to fish the back of the harbor for some bass on the light gear. 2 & 4lb mainly but also my big swimbait rod. First cast on the 3" Rasta bh bam 2lb sandy on 2lb test! Fun fight couple more little guys. I decided to switch over to the 5" swimmie and that's when the real excitement happened. Shot the bait out, crank crank BAM! I hook a real fish! Line Ripping off the reel with the drag buttoned down. I was glad to have him on the real rod with 50lb spectra and 25lb floro. Up and down big head shakes and drag ripping runs... All of a sudden plop sucked back down on the bottom. Straight dead weight for a little and I'm gaining ground. DEEP COLOR!!! Big dark brown outline coming up from the murky depths, super stoked now, I grab the gaff and go for the final couple turns of the handle. By now I have a crowd of paddle boarders around me watching. Couple more cranks.... Zzzzzzz straight back down to the bottom. Man, I want to get this fish up and sink the gaff! Start pulling a little harder and start to make some real headway. Got the floro connection out of the water final 6ft! Murky green water making it so I can't see more than the shadow. This fish is tired now, coming up with minimal fight. This is it the final cranks and!!! Total heart break!!!!!! No I didn't bust off a beautiful flattie! Instead it's a 3 or 3 1/2 foot wingspan wing hooked batray!!!! The paddle boarders were pretty stoked super bummed not the big flatty on the 5" swimmie I thought it was... Couple more little bass on the light gear and call it a day. Awesome warm water in the high 70s in the shallows. Hopefully my words made up for no pictures haha Abridged version Hand full of bass Big batray Heartbreak |
