Quick Newport Report 4/13
Just gonna give a quick report of this morning's outing.
Got out to my spot around 815 or so and starting dropping down for some rockfish. I was experimenting more than fishing, decided to use a lure and bait and see which was liked better. I had a 6" Basstrix on the top hook and some squid on the bottom. First drop, I hook a decent size red on the lure. Then I get a 2 lb copper on squid, and after that I get a chunky 17" and 3 lb copper on squid, this guy fought me the whole way up and was almost doubling over my rod. After the first 3, things really slowed down, caught a good sized red and a barberpole to end the day, both on squid. Stop at around 10 or so and stopped by the kelp briefly and threw a BH around, got nothing there. Got in at around 11. Overall, it was overcast and a little misty but seas were very smooth with a very minimal current until around 1030 when the wind really picked up and made it all choppy. Also, my conclusion for my experiment is that so far, squid is still king, however I did get some bites with the lure.
