5/6 First Yak tail
La Jolla 05/07/2007
Well seems like every time I take a new guy out and loose a rod, something good seems to happen. Well my cousin Omar is a crzy fisherman that throws a lure in any puddle of water her can find. I finally got him to get a kayak about a month ago and he’s been begging me to hit up La Jolla ever since. The reports for La Jolla haven’t been wide open and the weather called for wind, so I wasn’t really too thrilled about heading out. But like Dan Hernandez told us at the boat show… “Never pay to much attention to the reports…fish whenever you get a chance.” Boy did I remember those words today. We got to La Jolla with the sun was already way up. The plan was to get there at dark, but it was still no big deal. Both Omar and I punched thru the surf fairly easily … already the day was a plus. We paddled out to what I figured was passed the reserve and tried to make bait but no good. I suggest we try the kelp beds for bait and decided to troll a blue Rapala on the way over. This is about the same area I got that other beast (Thresher). Just as I got parallel to the Hotel, my line sings the classic ZZZZZZZZ. I took the rod out of the holder and set the hook, fish on! It instantly spun my kayak around and began to take line, I had my drag fairly loose as I was targeting bonita, but since I felt it was a tail I tightened up the drag. That’s when the party began, this thing was taking me for a ride! I was haulin butt fast! I ran thru Omar and his lure so fast I barely had time to reach for my second rod and get it out of the way of his trolling line. It was about a 15 minute fight, pulling me along for the first 10 and then spinning me in place as it headed straight down. Finally my first Kayak Yellowtail! When it came on its side, I couldn’t believe the size. It was my biggest yellow period, yak or boat. I asked Omar for his gaff and he let me hang on while I ripped the gills out. It did a few crzy head shakes but bled out nicely. I think this is the part where I lost my bait rod. Oh well, if it’s gonna be a rod per trophy fish then, let me stock up. It had completely engulfed my lure, so I hit up the iron while Omar stuck to the troll. He started getting pale so we called it a day at 11. On the way in I hit a quick bait flurry for a pencil Barracuda, but that was it. I heard it was a pretty slow day, at least for the kayakers I spoke to. A guy, sorry I didn’t get your name, busted out his scale and gave me a 46lb reading, and at home it was 46in long. Wow! Last edited by crzyboy180; 05-07-2007 at 11:51 AM. |
