Father's Day WSB!!
It's has been a busy couple of weeks and the surf has been good on weekends, so fishing time has been scarce. I found my window of opportunity on Father's Day (early). Had a plan to head out at 5:00 at Mission Bay, hit the bait barge (saving time making bait), catch few spotties on the way out through the South Mission Jetty. Caught a nice Sand Bass at the mouth but wanted more. Heading to the wreck and stopped on a nice meter mark. All by myself and then one boat came out. After a few rock fish the meter started lighting up so I set my sardine on the bottom and grabbed the yoyo rig and started cranking...at the second drop the iron hit bottom and the sardine line started screaming. I calmly reached back, set the hook and teh drag starts ripping. Knowing that I had something good and not wanting to have a tangle at the end, I secured the bent rod between both legs and winded the yoyo in and set the rig in the rod holder.(in a move that most kayakers know as "kayak yoga")
I was calmly fighting my large halibut when it got to about 50 yards and started taking drag like crazy. After 3-4 rounds of this, ralized that my halibut had turned into a black seabass. After two more rounds of this I started gaining and got to 25 yards feet. I kept gaining, thinking maybe I had a threasher, when it got to color and I saw this: 50 lb White Seabass; 53 inches I'm new to this so I am not sure if pics came in, but thanks to John Law for taking water pic.
