anyone run a timer on their bait tanks?

i have a hobie livewell.
500gph bilge
12V 11aH battery
cheapy humminbird ff

the bilge pumps water too fast. the original owner put a brass valve on the end of the inlet of the bilge to decrease water pressure/limit water coming in. however, i don't like the fact that i'm physically impeding the flow of the pump. i don't want the motor to burn out sooner than later.

anyone use an adjustable timer? call me cheap, but i wanted to see if it's worth the $40.
